Essays 9 – 15 Beginning their Run

In essay 16 there is a reference to the poem “The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo” by Gerard Manley Hopkins, who studied at Balliol College Oxford and with the essayist Walter Pater, and who developed the sprung rhythm style of prosody. The leaden echo is “wisdom is early to despair” and the golden echo is “give beauty back”. There is no beauty finer than that of nature.  The leaden echo is that of silent universities, and the golden echo is that of the mind.
